The Long Day, Eve of the Eclipse, and Other Stories

Good evening every one,

The past couple of days have been a little odd to say the least. “How did Tuesday go?” you are probably asking. Well, that was interesting. I went to bed Monday night about 8pm or so, thinking I was going to get a good nights sleep, and be ready for work at 6am. Well, I awoke about 10:30pm and was unable to return to sleep until about 2:30 am. So, I worked from 6am to 10am, had class from 10:30 to 11:30, and returned to work from 1pm to 9:30. after the second shift ended, I even stayed a little while longer to complete all of my homework. All of that on 5 hours of sleep. And I emerged successful. Hoora!

Lets get the checklist out of the way:

Quantum Mechanics and Relativity- We are moving away from the cool stuff now, and returning to the seemingly dull. More specifically the Bohr Theory of the atom, and some atomic structure stuff, energy states (and changes of) of the electron, etc. It’s not quite as interesting as the Relativity stuff, but that is not a surprise considering I have yet to take a class that I “thoroughly” enjoy, so to speak. Always the ‘rose with the thorn’.

Thermodynamics- Dull, dull and dull. Did I mention that this class is dull? I hope so, because the study of thermodynamics apparently requires the mind to be ‘numbed’. The professor is achieving this goal with a staggering amount of success. Ughh.

Theoretical Electromagnetism- This seems to be getting better, because this class is a bit of a follow up to the Physics 2220 course which also dealt on the subject lightly, and we are approaching material I did well on in the previous course. That gives me a bit of hope.

Last night was a lunar eclipse. For those of you who have never seen one, the moon turns orange. It’s really an amazing sight. And did I get to see it? No. The professor even let us out of class early to go up to the physics observatory to view the eclipse through the telescope. I had to wait for the second elevatior, because the first ride was full. The ones that went up first came right back down with the bad news. The cloud cover was so thick that you could not even see the moon, let alone the color change. Now I have to wait years for the next one, and hope for no clouds again. So for those of you who missed it this is what a lunar eclipse is supposed to be like:

This is what was visible:

Bummer huh?

Work is going fine I guess. We had our first staff meeting since the bad news of downsizing hit, and I was a little worried about the position that I have, and what would be left of what I do. We got the answer today. The news is good, sort of. Basically there wont be as many of us on staff here at the Lead Desk, so the number of those shifts will be taken down, which means that I will have more phone time (bad). And as far as the phone time is concerned, I will no longer be able to make my own hours (also bad). However, when I am on the Lead Desk, there is going to be more to do. For example staffing numbers and data entry. The former task may not mean as much to those of you who are not employed here, but I assure you it is tedious. But there are other tedious and annoying aspects to the job that are going the way of the Dodo. And I like them less. So as far as duties are concerned, I am trading unliked tediousness for some new stuff I might not mind. I don’t know how well that will go, but we will see. Time heals all wounds.
